Report: McCrory Flew to Campaign Events on Taxpayer Dime

RALEIGH, N.C. – A news report this week raises new questions about Governor McCrory’s use of state aircraft for campaign purposes. According to WBTV news, Governor McCrory has been using taxpayer-funded aircraft to travel to political events without fully reimbursing the state for the cost of the flight as required by North Carolina law.

WBTV reported six trips Governor McCrory took to Republican Governor’s Association campaign events on state aircraft at a cost of $62,697 in taxpayer money. However, records show the state was only paid $15,459 for the flights, leaving taxpayers on the hook for tens of thousands of dollars.

The report follows finance reports showing anemic fundraising for the McCrory campaign and illegal corporate campaign contributions from the RGA.

“It appears Governor McCrory is running his campaign on the taxpayer dime. After being substantially outraised, the McCrory campaign has turned to illegal corporate campaign contributions and the taxpayers to close the gap. This is not just irresponsible – it’s illegal. Taxpayers have no interest in funding the McCrory campaign’s air travel. It’s time for Governor McCrory to come clean about how he’s really been funding his campaign,” said NCDP spokesman Dave Miranda.
