ICYMI: Congresswoman Adams, Winston-Salem Leaders Call Out Senator Burr For Judicial Obstruction

Congresswoman Alma Adams: “Sen. Burr has refused to do his job for our country and for our state. And I don’t know about you, but anyone who refuses to do their job should be fired.”

Winston-Salem Journal, Qué Pasa on how Senator Burr’s politics-first obstruction has hurt NC communities

WINSTON-SALEM – Following a press conference with Congresswoman Alma Adams and other leaders in the Winston-Salem community, Senator Burr received another round of headlines on his closed-door boasts about perpetuating a judicial emergency in North Carolina’s Eastern District, his vow to continue obstructing a nominee to the Supreme Court, and how his politics-first approach has hurt communities he was elected to serve.

“In another part of the recording, Burr boasted about his part in keeping open a federal judge’s seat in eastern North Carolina. In addition, Burr talked about the U.S. Supreme Court seat left vacant after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February.

“‘If Hillary becomes president, I’m going to do everything I can do to make sure that four years from now, we’re still going to have an opening on the Supreme Court,’ Burr said.

“Democrats have seized on the leaked comment to say Burr is taking GOP obstructionism to a new low as they continued to boost Ross. As an example, U.S. Rep. Alma Adams, D-12th, who represents a section of Winston-Salem, and other Democrats met at Burr’s satellite Senate office in Winston-Salem to denounce Burr’s leaked comments.

“‘As a senator, Richard Burr has a responsibility to all of North Carolinians regardless of political party. He has a constitutional responsibility to advise and consent on presidential nominees for the judiciary. Sen. Burr has refused to do his job for our country and for our state. And I don’t know about you, but anyone who refuses to do their job should be fired.

“‘It’s time to hire someone else, and that someone else is Deborah Ross,’ Adams said….”

“A group of Democratic leaders, led by US Rep. Alma Adams, accused Senator Richard Burr of blocking ‘justice.’…

“In a recording from the news channel CNN, Senator Burr is heard bragging that he has blocked two of President Barack Obama’s nominations to fill a vacancy for a judge in the Eastern District [of North Carolina] court and will continue to do so with nominees to the Supreme Court if Hillary Clinton is elected president.

“‘Senator Burr has taken partisan obstructionism to a new low,’ said Congresswoman Alma Adams, noting that a Senator has the responsibility to represent all the people of North Carolina, regardless of their political party. ‘Someone who refuses to do his job should be fired.’

“Meanwhile, Ellison said the recordings of Burr dispel any doubt that the Senator has not done his work for the people in North Carolina, asking voters to respond by getting out and voting.

“‘Support Deborah Ross, she is what North Carolina deserves,’ Ellison said.”
