Congresswoman Alma Adams And Winston-Salem Leaders Denounce Senator Burr For Putting Politics Before North Carolinians By Obstructing Judicial Nominees

In press conference in front of Senator Burr’s office, leaders condemn his boasts captured in a recording released by CNN about intentionally perpetuating a judicial emergency in North Carolina’s Eastern District

WINSTON-SALEM – Congresswoman Alma Adams joined Winston-Salem City Councilwoman DD Adams and Forsyth County Democratic Party Chair Eric Ellison for a press conference outside Senator Burr’s Winston-Salem office to rail against his boasts of judicial obstruction. In closed-door comments reported by CNN earlier this week, Burr bragged about his unprecedented obstruction of the Eastern District Court vacancy and promised more gridlock for future Supreme Court nominees unless Donald Trump is elected President.

“Senator Burr has taken partisan obstructionism to a new low,” said Representative Alma Adams (D-NC). “As a Senator, Richard Burr has a responsibility to represent all North Carolinians – regardless of political party. He has a responsibility to ‘advise and consent’ on presidential nominees for the judiciary. Essentially, Senator Burr has refused to do his job for our state. Someone who refuses to do his job should be fired.”

“Senator Burr said the American people needed a voice on the nominee – as if they hadn’t already expressed that voice when they reelected President Obama. Faced with the prospect of another Democrat in the White House, Senator Burr is changing his tune,” said Winston-Salem Councilwoman DD Adams. “There is one constant with Senator Burr: he will go to work only for himself, not for the people who he’s supposed to represent.”

“The recently released audio of Senator Richard Burr is evidence that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Senator Burr has not done his job for the people of North Carolina,” said Forsyth County Democratic Party Chairman Eric Ellison. “We see that Senator Burr has chosen throwing red meat to his ultra-conservative base and getting himself reelected over the best interests of our state – and that’s just wrong.”

Senator Burr has blocked two judicial nominees for a vacancy in the Eastern District of North Carolina, which is classified as a judicial emergency and at over ten years is the longest running vacancy in American history. Senator Burr also vowed to prevent Hillary Clinton, if she became President, from appointing a nominee during remarks in which he also made comments about gun owners putting a ‘bullseye’ on Secretary Clinton, sparking outrage across North Carolina.
