NCDP Calls for McCrory to Denounce Newton’s ‘Keep our state straight’ Comments

RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Democratic Party today called for Governor McCrory to denounce comments made by State Senator and Attorney General candidate Buck Newton. On Monday Newton asked supporters at a pro-HB2 rally to “tell your friends and family how hard we must fight to keep our state straight.” The comments have caused widespread backlash.

“On Monday, Buck Newton, one of the architects of HB2, doubled down on his bill to legalize discrimination and stated loudly and clearly that LGBT people aren’t welcome in North Carolina,” said NCDP spokesman Dave Miranda. “It is this bigotry that is driving jobs out of North Carolina every day. Governor McCrory needs to stand up, call on his nominee for Attorney General to apologize, and send a clear message that Buck Newton doesn’t speak for North Carolina.”

Gov. McCrory has attempted to blame the backlash to HB2 on a “national smear campaign.” But with his comments Monday, Newton, a close ally of the governor, made clear the real intent of the law.
