Sen. Buck Newton: “Keep our state straight”

Bill sponsor and GOP AG nominee admits real purpose of HB2

RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina Democrats today are calling on State Sen. Buck Newton to apologize for his hateful, discriminatory remarks yesterday, in which Newton told a group of supporters to “tell your friends and family how hard we must fight to keep our state straight.” In the wake of Newton’s gay-bashing, Democrats are also demanding that Gov. Pat McCrory denounce Newton’s hateful comments.

“One of the Republican sponsors of HB 2 just admitted the real purpose of the law: to make North Carolina unwelcoming to LGBT people,” said North Carolina Democratic Party spokesman Dave Miranda. “HB2 is hurting our economy and driving away jobs because it’s about discrimination, plain and simple. This bad law should be repealed.”

“Saying we need to ‘fight to keep our state straight’ is unacceptable, especially for someone who says he wants to represent the people of North Carolina,” added Miranda. “Newton must apologize for his remarks, and McCrory must denounce them.”

Newton made the remarks yesterday during a pro-discrimination rally that coincided with the first day of the General Assembly’s legislative session. Newton was the Senate champion of House Bill 2, which removed employees’ ability to sue employers for discrimination in state court. One consequence of Newton’s bill is that North Carolinians may now be discriminated against on the basis of age, gender, race, skin color, national origin or religion. Newton’s bill has so far cost the state 1,750 jobs and $77 million dollars.

State Sen. Darren Jackson yesterday introduced a bill to repeal HB2, and North Carolina Democrats are pushing Gov. McCrory to repeal the job-killing discrimination bill he and Newton foisted on the state last month.
