On video, McCrory doubles down on Trump: “I will support the Republican nominee”

Raleigh, NC – Yesterday, the Winston-Salem Journal reported that Governor Pat McCrory would support any eventual Republican nominee, including Donald Trump. In response to criticism in North Carolina and around the country, the McCrory campaign attempted to deflect:

“The governor will support the party’s nominee,” McCrory campaign spokesman Ricky Diaz earlier told the Winston-Salem Journal, in a statement that spurred Wednesday’s Democratic flurry. “The governor has not endorsed a candidate in the primary and believes the process should work out on its own.”

After the flurry of press releases Wednesday, Diaz said that the groups sending them out “must think that North Carolinians are stupid.”

Last night, however, Governor McCrory appeared on Capital Tonight with Tim Boyum. When specifically pressed on whether he would support Donald Trump as the Republican nominee for president, McCrory said:

Boyum: Are you going to support the Republican nominee regardless of who it is?

McCrory: Yes, I will support the Republican nominee but I’m staying out of the presidential race.

Boyum: Even if it’s Donald Trump, you will support the Republican nominee?

McCrory: I will support the Republican nominee.

Governor McCrory has now repeatedly and specifically said he will support Donald Trump if he is the Republican nominee for President of the United States. Bizarrely, the McCrory campaign has sought to deny this truth and distract with some very Trump-ian name-calling. But as it stands today, Donald Trump is the overwhelming frontrunner for the Republican nomination and Pat McCrory has pledged his full support if he wins,” said  NCDP spokesman Ford Porter.
